Prevention Education

Step Up Naugy offers a variety of trainings and programs relating to prevention education. Many of these trainings happen regularly at our office, but we are more than happy to bring a training to you as well! Just email sun@naugatuckyouthservices.org with the training you are interested in and we will work with you to schedule it!

Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR)​

QPR is a suicide prevention training that covers both national and local statistics, warning signs of suicide, and tips for how you can start a conversation with someone you are worried may be considering suicide. This training takes approximately an hour and a half to complete and attendees are given a certificate of completion, as well as a resource guide, at the close of the training. This training is geared toward adults and teens ages 16 & over.

Gizmo's Pawesome Guide to Mental Health​

Gizmo's Pawesome Guide to Mental Health is a K-5 curriculum designed to introduce students to the concept of mental health, and what they can do to take care of their mental health. Students discuss with the facilitator what it means to feel sad, mad, or worried, and develop a mental wellness plan as a personal resource for when they need to regulate or manage their emotions. This program takes about an hour to complete.

Mentor Training 101​

Our Mentor Training 101 is designed to introduce and prepare adults for working with young people. In this introductory training we cover the different types of mentoring, stages of relationship development, confidentiality, and basic conflict management techniques. This training can be delivered as a one hour webinar or a two our in-person training with hands on activity.

Vaping & ENDS Prevention 101​

We currently offer a Vaping & ENDS presentation for middle and high school students. The presentation covers the dangers of vaping and nicotine on the developing brain and body, as well as the other harmful chemicals that are found in ENDS products and state-level laws relevant to tobacco use. This training includes learning activities to keep youth engaged and typically takes the entirety of a class period.

Clear the Air​

Clear the Air is a discussion based training for young people on the harmful effects of marijuana. The facilitator works with the young people to establish a list of the reasons many young people feel that marijuana is safe, and debunks those myths one by one. This training takes 45 minutes to an hour to complete.

LGBTQ+ 101​

The LGBTQ+ population is at increased risk for both substance use and suicide. This training is designed for trusted adults (particularly teachers and other school staff) and sets out to outline terms and phrases specific to LGBTQ+ culture. The goal of the training is to build a better understanding of LGBTQ+ students' terminology and culture so that we can all be better allies to them. This training takes approximately one hour, and can be combined with QPR for a total of a two hour training.

Narcan Training​

Training is also available in Narcan (or Naloxone) use. This training is designed for individuals 16 & over, and takes about an hour and a half to complete. The training covers the history of the opioid epidemic, a closer look at types of opioids or medications of risk, signs that someone in experiencing an overdose, and how to administer Narcan and call for help. This training can also be combined with QPR for a total of a 2.5 to 3 hour training.
